The Campaign Against Foreign Control of Aotearoa (CAFCA) congratulates the Government for its moves this week to prevent strategic assets on sensitive land from being sold into foreign ownership. Our only question is – what took you so long? It’s been glaringly obvious for many months that the NZ public is up in arms at the prospect of Auckland Airport being sold overseas, be it to Dubai or Canada. And we expect to see these new overseas investment criteria used to block any renewed attempt by the Christchurch City Council via its holding company to sell the Lyttelton Port Company overseas. Mayor refuses Keep Our Port Public petitioners speaking rights at Council

The Keep Our Port Public coalition (KOPP) has recently closed a petition, which gathered nearly 3,000 signatures, calling on the Christchurch City Council not to sell any of the Lyttelton Port Company to Hutchison Port Holdings Ltd of Hong Kong or any other foreign or New Zealand company, and for the Council to commit to keeping the Port Company in 100% public ownership. Council just doesn’t get it – it’s our port, not theirs’

The Keep Our Port Public coalition is expecting a big turn out to its Monday April 10 meeting on why the port of Lyttelton should stay in public ownership.

Around 50 supporters of public ownership of the port picketed the Christchurch City Council office on Thursday morning, and most went in to hear the Council discuss the port sale issue. Read Full Post
